Mind & Spirit
Mitchell Spencer
Mitchell's introduction to photography was a required course for an undergraduate architectural degree. After developing film and printing his first black and white photographs, the excitement of capturing and developing an image "hooked him". During his military service and after graduate school, he traveled in Asia and Europe studying architecture and taking photographs.
Because of employment, Mitchell drifted away from photography for about 25 years. During fall 2002 and spring 2003, he took a sabbatical from teaching to pursue academic interests, study architecture, and travel in the United States and Europe. During this time, he rediscovered the excitement of the developing black and white prints in the "wet" darkroom. Recently, Mitchell has made the transition from film to digital while still using the principles of photography learned from film and the wet darkroom.
One of the major influences has been the cinematography of Sergei Eisenstien, Leni Riefenstahl, Orson Wells, etc durning the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The use of camera angle, lighting, composition, etc, in films of this period are an influence on his photography. After forty years, he is still fascinated with attempting to capture part of a familiar view as an artistic image.
Tiffany Bailey
My main objective is to create well crafted functional wares that can be used in everyday life. I want my pieces to be of the highest quality and comfort. I appreciate the simple design that is clean and smooth. To achieve these clean and simple forms, I work with porcelain and various smoothing tools to eliminate and surface textures.
Bailey is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and apprenticed in 2007 with Eau Claire potter David Caradori. Her pots, vases and cups are void of complexities with an organic look and feel.
Often to add to the simplicity of my pieces and the intimacy between the piece and the user, I will omit handles and create a notch that allows for the hand to mold into the pieces and those who use them.
